Normandy

Normandy, a magnificent region, is the emblem of a historic period which helps us better understand the life that we know.

My project traverses some of the area — the key to what we know, where hardly sixty-six years ago the Allied Forces made their first advance to liberate Europe. The spirit of their courage lies beneath the normailty and peace we enjoy today, which is the fruit of those who fought in this epochal place. It must have been one of the least hospitable places on the planet.

The experiences I had and the places I visited were conquered by men who paid high price and made many sacrifices, and we can still strongly perceive this even if we haven’t experienced it ourselves.
The beauty of this place should not cause us to forget the history that allows us to enjoy it today.

It’s for that reason that my project is made up of portraits and testimonies of the men and women who lived and made history during that period, and who left a profound scar in place of their lives in the pages of twentieth century history.

Nobody must ever forget the real price paid for liberty. To strengthen the grace of their sacrifices, we must commit their story to our collective memory.

The Strength of Nature

We usually imagine that any human interference with the landscape does nothing but “invade”, modify, and often irreversibly sabotage nature.
For decades, the production of energy destroyed nature, marking the landscape with indelibale scars. At an old power station, high-voltage pylons are “colonized” by photovoltaic panels to protect a back pasture.
The propellers of wind turbines turn through the trees.
The mountain seems to tolerate these odd new appearances of different colours and sounds.
For man to find harmony in the dissonance between these different worlds, the environment and its concerns need to be close to humans, with utility and integrity.
Alternative energy should not be alternative to nature.

Pianosa

Anyone who walks the streets and paths of Pianosa today has the impression of being in a place where time stopped many years ago.
I retraced the footsteps of the few free men who might have seen it, trying to see what they would have seen and following the memory of a place whose territory is strongly marked by its history.
The closure of the penal colonies and the abandonment of their structures have allowed nature to reclaim them. However, those places witness a secret story of ordinary people unlikely to be swallowed in the silence and forgotten.
I tried to use my gaze to preserve the historical memory. The island has been abandoned and risks being forgotten. Over time it has seen the detention not only of common people, but of people ranging from Sandro Pertini to Renato Curcio to high-ranking mafiosi. This maximum security prison is a part of the history of our country. These imprisonments have been forgotten, perhaps accidentally or perhaps deliberately — because of the nature of them. But either way, for better or for worse, this history is ours.
